Course Overview: The course begins with a crash course in cursive handwriting, focusing on: letter formation, visual perceptual skills, bilateral coordination skills, and muscle memory. The remainder of the year will be spent studying the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In addition, students will write an essay per quarter, including: narrative essays, descriptive essays, expository essays, and research essays. The focus will be on the fundamentals of writing well-constructed essays: brainstorming, writing an outline, proofreading, peer editing, revising, and publishing. 

Student Expectations: 
     • Bring iPad, notebook, and writing utensil to class daily
     • Complete homework assignments on time
     • Actively engage in classroom activities

Evaluation: Student work is assessed according to the COSL standards at Viking Middle School and on the criteria below. Homework may be in the form of written assignments or review, generally 15 minutes. 

Homework: Daily Language Instruction (DLI) 4 nights per week
Quizzes: every Friday
Tests: one per unit
Classwork: daily journals and Daily Language Review (DLR)/ Daily Language Paragraph (DLP) activities
