Course Overview: The course begins with a crash course in the following subjects: spelling and pronunciation; numbers 0-100; greetings and introductions; weather and seasons; telling time; classroom subjects and items; and asking questions. The remainder of the year will be spent studying the next four units of the textbook: México, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and Perú. Each unit consists of four lessons, including: vocabulary, grammar, culture, and communication. Vocabulary topics to be covered include: describing family members, describing house/chores, shopping around town, and ordering food. Grammatical points presented are: conjugating present tense -ar, -er, and -ir verbs; stem-changing verbs e-ie and o-ue; irregular verbs, ser or estar; possessive adjective, demonstrative adjectives and comparative adjectives. 

Student Expectations: 
     • Bring iPad, notebook, and writing utensil to class daily
     • Complete homework assignments on time
     • Actively engage in classroom activities
     • Respond to written and verbal cues in Spanish

Evaluation: Student work is assessed according to the COSL standards at Viking Middle School and on the criteria below. Homework may be in the form of written assignments or review, generally 15-20 minutes. 
 
Homework: 4 nights per week
Quizzes: every Friday
Tests: one per lesson, evaluating: vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening
Performance Tasks: usually one per quarter
Classwork: practice activities
